Aero Systems Hypersonic Aero Propulsion Clean-Air Test Bed

Aero Systems Engineering Inc. a global leader in engine test cell and custom wind tunnel facilities announced today it has signed a contract with the US Air Force to finalize the completion of its Hypersonic Aero Propulsion Clean-Air Test Bed. Once completed, it will be the first and only clean-air facility of its kind in the world.

Tasked with the mission of supporting our nation's hypersonics needs, Hypersonic Aerothermal and Propulsion Clean Air Testbed was conceived by the Test Resource Management Center (TRMC). Designed and built by Aero Systems Engineering along with Orbital ATK the facility simulates real-world environments at speeds approaching Mach 8. This simulation is achieved without the vitiation effects seen in other high Mach facilities. As a clean-air test bed, the Hypersonic Aerothermal and Propulsion Clean Air Test bed environment is free of pollutants that are typical by-products of other test facilities, but would not be present in real-world conditions.

“With its clean air system this facility will support cutting edge hypersonic research for decades” said ASE’s CEO David Meier.

As the hypersonic arena advances, so does the demand for accurate, real-world test simulation. Hypersonic Aerothermal and Propulsion Clean Air Test bed uses a unique regenerative storage heater to create the punishing temperatures and pressures that hypersonic vehicles encounter approaching Mach 8. Once complete, Orbital ATK will make the test facility available to both government and commercial customers for a variety of test applications, including hypersonic engines, as well as component or material aero-thermal tests.
